Built-in Shelves Styling
If you own a home, you know that there is always a project that you can complete. We are in the home stretch for completing renovations on our first home. Recently, we decided to add ventilation over our oven, which we did not originally have and that turned into adding brand new built-in shelves in our living room. As we talked through where to get the stove to vent outside (our stove sits in the middle of our house on the first tory) we remembered that there was a ton of unused space above our basement stairs. Our contractor had the great suggestion of adding built in shelves to utilize some of this space. So our little project snowballed once again.
The shelves would replace the mirror that had been living in this spot. I wanted the built-in to look seamless and like it was always there so we decided against trim. We painted the unit the same color as the rest of the living room. We already had some shelves in our living room that were dark thick wood so we decided to keep it uniform and use the same shelves. My husband took the initiative and placed the shelves unevenly. At first I wasn't sure I liked it, it wasn't how I initially pictured the shelves, but it ended up working out and gives us more flexibility with items that we can place on the shelves. Since the shelves are in our dining/living room I added elements of both. The artwork is from a local artist that specializes in botanical pen drawings, Emilie Mann. I added in our engagement photo book that doubled as our wedding guest signature book.
Now on to our next project!
