Weekend Getaway To San Diego
My husband and I recently escaped the long winter for a weekend getaway to sunny San Diego. Portland is basically overcast for the nine months out of the year, the price we pay for a beautiful summer. Usually by February we are in desperate need of some sunshine and warm weather and plan a quick trip somewhere warmer.
We spent the first day just walking around and exploring the city. The sun was shining and it was a warm 70 degrees. We started the morning off fueling up on some caffeine at a breezy coffee shop called Lofty Coffee where they roast specialty coffee. Once we were fully awake, we walked through the famous Balboa Park, the Gaslamp District and Little Italy. We were able to spend the day walking around thanks to the most comfortable sneakers, All Birds. These sneakers have gotten me through many trips.
I was itching to get to the ocean and we took a trip out to La Jolla. We spent the second half of the day walking on the rocks along the ocean. There are sea lions and seals just lounging on the rocks just a few feet away from where people are walking. We headed back to our hotel to get ready for dinner. We decided to eat in Little Italy at a delicious, authentic Italian restaurant, Civico 1845. It is a small, family owned restaurant that felt like we were transported back to Italy. After dinner, we found a local wine bar, Pali Wine Co, and enjoyed a glass of wine on the roof top terrace.
The next day we woke up to cloudy weather, it felt like Portland followed us to San Diego. We decided to make the most of it since we were only there for the weekend and set out to explore the city some more. There was a market a few blocks from our hotel that we walked through and sampled some local treats. After that we made our way down to the marina and walked around watching the boats go by. Our final stop before heading back home was to try the famous Crack Shack, a joint all about chicken. I am a sucker for a delicious fried chicken sandwich and the Firebird did not disappoint. We enjoyed our quick weekend getaway, even through it wasn't as sunny and warm as we would have liked. We love traveling and exploring new cities, can't wait to see where we decide to go next!
